Refining Your Profile Without Redefining Your Identity

A legitimate concern for many non-caucasian patients considering rhinoplasty is losing qualities in their facial structure that are specific to their ethnicity, whether African American, Asian, Latino or Hispanic, or Middle Eastern. Whether they want to change their look cosmetically or correct their deviated septum, keeping unique features is imperative to their ethnic identity. Choosing a surgeon who sees the importance of that concern and works diligently to perform their patient’s rhinoplasty without losing those features is paramount to the satisfaction of their results.

What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Facial features play a large role in the cultural identities of most non-caucasian individuals. They struggle to alter their profile or correct functional issues related to their nose without losing the qualities that connect their look to their ethnic identity. For patients in and around Fairfield County Ethnic Rhinoplasty was created to allow for the enhancements our patients desire while maintaining the unique characteristics that are part of their identity, leaving them with natural-looking and realistic results to their bone structure.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty vs Traditional Rhinoplasty

Every individual is different and should be celebrated. While traditional rhinoplasties are a viable option for many patients, over the years, we have found that the main concern for many is wanting a new look but not wanting to lose the characteristics that connect them to their cultural identity. Often non-caucasian patients would be left with results that felt and looked unnatural. The practice of ethnic rhinoplasty has identified the different facial features tied to many ethnicities, including African American, Asian, Latino or Hispanic, and Middle Eastern. Taking that knowledge, doctors have created a procedure that respects those features while creating a look that the patient desires.

Benefits of Ethnic Rhinoplasty

The primary goal of an ethnic rhinoplasty is a new look or improved function while maintaining the natural characteristics that connect your facial profile to your ethnic identity. Benefits, while maintaining your natural ethnic characteristics, include:

  • Improving breathing function related to nasal structure or trauma
  • An improved harmonious look
  • Smooth, aligned bridge
  • Size correction that compliments the facial structure
  • Improved confidence

Am I A Candidate For Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

The ideal candidate for ethnic rhinoplasty is a healthy, non-smoking, non-caucasian person who has reached physical maturity. It is important for rhinoplasty candidates to have realistic expectations of their results and to understand that rhinoplasty is a surgery that requires recovery in order to heal and achieve their desired results. Concerns you may have that we can address with your ethnic rhinoplasty:

  • Functional issues, such as a deviated septum or other breathing issues related to the structure of your nose
  • Nasal Trauma
  • Asymmetry
  • Wide or crooked nasal bridge
  • A bump or depression in the bridge
  • Disproportionate size
  • Nasal shape or size
  • A tip that is too wide or misshaped

Consultation and Preparation

While Dr. Newman has created a rhinoplasty method that has greatly reduced the extent of surgery, it is still an invasive procedure that requires planning and preparation. At The Aesthetic Center, we want to ensure that you are an ideal patient for surgery and have realistic expectations and understanding of the procedure and results. This process starts with a consultation, where we will discuss the issues you want to address and how rhinoplasty can achieve those goals. Dr. Newman will do a thorough health assessment, including bloodwork, to ensure that surgery is an option for you. The medical team will provide you with a preparation plan, but some instructions may include:

  • A medication review; certain medicines are not recommended during surgery and during the healing process
  • Arranging care; you will not be able to drive yourself home post-surgery, nor should you be alone for at least the first 24 hours.
  • No alcohol. Alcohol can thin the blood, affecting surgery and your healing process
  • No food before surgery

Procedure

The Aesthetic Center was designed with your comfort and privacy in mind. We also maintain a strict contamination policy and hold the state’s lowest infection rates. In our free-standing surgical center, your surgery and post-anesthesia aftercare should last less than 5 hours. After general anesthesia, your surgery may look different depending on your goals. However, Dr. Newman will begin by making incisions in a way that minimizes any potential for scarring. After completing the surgery, he will stint the nose and apply bandaging to stabilize and protect your nose during the healing process. Once you have awakened from anesthesia, you will be released and can start your recovery.
