What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (known medically as abdominoplasty) is an elective, cosmetic surgical procedure that helps flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin, and tightening muscles.

Often, exercise is not enough to tighten loose abdominal muscles, especially after pregnancy or weight loss. If the skin around your midsection is loose or sagging, you may want to consider tummy tuck.

Your surgeon cuts away excess skin and fat in order to flatten and firm the appearance of your stomach. Typically, your underlying abdominal muscles are also surgically fastened to achieve a taut core. It’s important to remember that tummy tuck will enhance the benefits of proper diet and exercise, but is not a substitute for them.

Our Personalized Procedures

There are three types of tummy tucks:

Mini Abdominoplasty

Mini abdominoplasty removes loose skin below your belly button. It is the least invasive version of tummy tuck and requires the least amount of downtime.

Extended Abdominoplasty

Also known as a “360 tummy tuck”, extended abdominoplasty tightens your abdominal muscles and removes loose skin from your belly, your “love handles,” and your lower back. This treatment delivers the most visible results, but also requires a more extensive recovery than less comprehensive options.

Standard Abdominoplasty

The standard abdominoplasty removes loose skin and also tightens your abdominal muscles.

Safety is Our Top Priority

Are you a good candidate for tummy tuck? Good candidates have a stable weight, do not smoke and do not have conditions that inhibit safe surgery and normal wound healing.

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are in good physical condition, with pockets of fat or loose skin that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty can also be appropriate for slightly obese people whose skin has lost some of its elasticity, and for women with skin and muscles stretched from pregnancy. Anyone planning on losing a significant amount of weight, and women planning on having (more) children, should wait before undergoing abdominoplasty.

Patients who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30 will not benefit from tummy tuck. If you have clotting issues or complications from previous surgeries, you should avoid abdominoplasty. If you are planning a substantial weight loss or a future pregnancy, it’s a good idea to postpone tummy tuck surgery.

Preparing for a Tummy Tuck

Before starting your tummy tuck Fairfield County plastic surgeons at The Aesthetic Center require that you provide your medical history, including previous surgeries and a list of all medications and supplements you are taking. If you smoke, you will be directed to stop for a specified period before and after your tummy tuck. You may be asked to undergo lab tests such as a complete blood work-up.

Your Procedure

You will need to abstain from food or drink after midnight prior to your surgery. Your tummy tuck might be performed in a hospital, a free-standing ambulatory facility or an office-based surgical suite. General anesthesia is generally recommended.

Abdominoplasty takes approximately 2 to 5 hours to perform. The patient is placed under general anesthesia. Two incisions are made: one from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area, and another around the navel. Skin is separated from the abdominal muscles, which are then pulled together and stitched into place for a firmer abdomen and narrower waist. The skin flap is then stretched down over the newly tightened muscles, excess skin is removed, and the navel is reattached where it looks natural. The incisions are then closed, and sterile surgical dressings are applied over the sutured areas.

Care that Continues

Tummy Tuck Recovery

After surgery, a temporary tube may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site. An overnight hospital stay may be necessary. Recovery time ranges from 2 weeks to 2 months. Abdominoplasty leaves a scar spanning the lower abdomen from hip to hip, although it is generally low enough to be concealed by a bikini.

Our team provides you with comprehensive aftercare instructions during your consultation, so you know exactly what to expect through each step of your recovery. We schedule follow-up appointments as necessary to give your body the best possible chance for an ideal recovery.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Most Fairfield County tummy tuck patients rate their discomfort level at mild to moderate. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication as appropriate.

Women in their late thirties and early forties are the most common tummy patients for this procedure, but anyone can seek a tummy tuck as long as they are in good health.

In addition to the usual risks associated with surgery and anesthesia, risks associated with abdominoplasty include the following:

  • Asymmetry
  • Poor aesthetic result
  • Unsightly scarring
  • Numbness in skin sensation
  • Need for revisional surgery

Patients who have had previous abdominal surgery may find that their old scars look more raised, have stretched or are more noticeable in general. Undergoing a scar revision may minimize their prominence.

All surgeries carry risk of infection, excessive bleeding and allergic reactions to medications and materials.

Most women lose 2-3 dress sizes. Men will lose several pants sizes. While tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, most patients lose about five pounds.

No. Localized fat cells are permanently removed and cannot return. However, the fat cells that remain will continue to grow and shrink as your weight fluctuates.

Maintaining weight with a balanced diet and regular exercise provides long-lasting results. Barring large weight fluctuations, tummy tuck results are usually permanent.
